Amanda Lawrence

When my son, Sawyer, was born I could not have been happier. I knew my whole life that my true purpose was to be a mom, and it was finally my time. I was overjoyed and felt so fulfilled. I was also overcome with anxiety. My postpartum anxiety centered on sleep, and I worried constantly about his safety.

For the first five months of my son's life, my husband and I alternated taking turns staying up all night to hold him and ensure that he was safe. The only way I could get any sleep at all was if I knew that my husband was awake and watching him breathe. This, of course,  was unsustainable and led to extreme exhaustion. It also prevented my son from learning healthy sleep habits and led to a long road of sleep troubles. I was against sleep training due to my anxiety and my belief that it would harm the bond between me and my son, and nothing was more important than that.

So, we fought through it. I read books about how to improve baby sleep, made countless 2am google searches while he slept in my arms, and felt like I had set him up for failure after we celebrated his first birthday and he still wasn't consistently sleeping through the night. We did make progress slugging through and figuring it out on our own. But, even as a medical professional, it was a long, exhausting, and drawn-out process. And at 2 years old, we were still lying next to him holding his hand through the crib bars as he fell asleep. Finally, I researched sleep training and found it was not what I thought it was. It didn't have to mean leaving my son to cry for hours on end. We implemented a gentle method and after two nights our son was falling asleep without assistance and sleeping through the night.

It doesn't have to be so hard. You don't have to wait for years, like I did, hoping that eventually you will be able to sleep again. To feel like yourself again.  And you don't have to do it alone.
 It also doesn't mean that you have to jeopardize your bond with your child, leave them alone to cry for hours, or give up breastfeeding. If you are exhausted and running on fumes, but hesitant or afraid to sleep train;
I see you. I hear you. I was you. I can help show you another way.

I believe that your baby deserves a restorative night of sleep so that they can continue to develop and grow. They also deserve well rested parents who can show up as their best selves, and that is very difficult to do when you're running on empty. I also believe that you deserve to feel well rested, clear headed, and have time for YOU. You deserve to have time to yourself after your baby falls asleep- to read a book, take a bath, or watch some Netflix.

What I do not believe in is leaving a baby or child alone in their room to cry for hours until they fall asleep from sheer exhaustion. I don't use cry it out methods. Instead, I teach gentle methods to help your child learn to fall asleep without assistance. It's not a one size fits all approach. I take your child's temperament, age, and unique situation into consideration when suggesting methods and writing a sleep plan tailored specifically to your child. I also factor in what your goals are for your family and how you would like life to look. Our time together is a collaboration, and your views, goals, and level of comfort are key components.

My career as an Oncology Registered Nurse has always been rooted in empathy, gentleness, and patience.  Every patient has their own story and is following their own personal path. This naturally carries over to sleep consulting. Each family is unique and deserves to be treated as so. Every parent, caregiver, and baby deserves to be treated with respect, patience, and understanding. This is exactly what you can expect from Stories & Starlight.
My philosophy

Sleep training does not have to come at the cost of your bond with your baby or hours of them crying alone. My gentle, responsive methods will get your baby sleeping peacefully — without sacrificing your connection.

4-month-old being held to sleep all night long. The parents were taking shifts staying up and holding him. He would scream if he was put into the crib and was still waking up every 2-3 hours while being held. Over two weeks we implemented a gentle and gradual plan. By week two he was falling asleep independently in his crib, self settling at night, and waking one time for a bottle.
11-month-old struggling with naps, false starts, and frequent night wakings. Needed to be fed and rocked to sleep. Parents had previously tried Ferber and felt that it didn't go well. We implemented a gentle method and by the end of two weeks he was falling asleep on his own in his crib and sleeping through the night.

Amanda was AMAZING! before we decided to hire someone to help us figure out sleep training, I was a mess. My mental health was being effected by my and my sons lack of sleep. When my son was 5 months old he started waking up constantly and not being able to go back to sleep unless I picked him up and held him. It got to the point where I was sometimes going in nearly every 20 minutes to hold him and he would cry when I put him down. After catching a cold it just got worse and we brought him into our bed for a couple nights. After he was better he refused to sleep anywhere but with me in the bed. He stopped napping unless he was in the bed or being rocked and I just couldn’t go to sleep at 7:00pm every night when it was his bedtime. We tried 2 different methods of sleep training but neither were successful and we had really started to lose hope until we found Amanda. If you’re wondering if it’s really worth it to hire someone to come up with a sleep plan for you and to answer all your questions, the answer is YES! We got a super thorough sleep plan from Amanda and managed to get all the answers we needed to finally get our boy sleeping. 5 days into sleep training he was able to connect his sleep cycles by himself and didn’t need me to hold him to sleep anymore at all. He is a totally different baby now that he’s getting the sleep he needs. He’s just the happiest boy and I couldn’t be more thankful to Amanda for helping us through this really tough time. Do you and your baby a favor and just get the package. You will not be disappointed!

We decided we wanted to start sleep training when our son turned 5 months old and we moved him into his own room. He had a couple good nights here and there but was very dependent on his paci and would wake every single sleep cycle. It took one night of getting up every 20 minutes to finally pull the trigger on sleep training. We got to talking to Amanda and we instantly felt comfortable. We knew we wanted a gentle approach to sleep training but wanted it to work quickly. Amanda gave us options for different methods based off our son’s temperament. And that’s the game changer. We tried sleep training on our own in the past with our older daughter and nothing ever worked and now I understand why. Sleep training isn’t a one size fits all type of thing. Every child is different. Amanda took the time to talk to us and get to know our son, his props, his environment and tailored a plan that would set him up for success. When we started we had 12 wake ups in one night- yes 12. Now even with him being sick it’s no more than 3! And I’m confident that we will continue to improve because now we have the tools and the confidence to make it happen. I’m so thankful to have worked with Amanda! Her professionalism, patience and encouragement made our success possible!

Amanda was so amazing right from the start. She provided me with action steps and advice before I was even officially her client. When we started working together I was desperate for help. My mental health was impacted due to the lack of sleep and frustration. My baby would only co-sleep and contact nap with me after I bounced, rocked or fed him to sleep. Even sleeping close to me he was not sleeping more than a few hours at a time through the night and for naps he would not sleep in his crib and would wake up every single transfer. Amanda helped me transition my son from co-sleeping to crib sleeping in a few weeks. She helped me use gentle methods where I was able to comfort my son and be by his side every step of the way without leaving him to cry. We phased out his sleep props and he is learning to put himself to sleep. When I felt overwhelmed Amanda was always available to talk me through and help me understand that I was helping my son and myself. She regularly responded after her normal hours to make sure I felt supported through the hard moments. After a few weeks my son finally is sleeping at least 4 hours for his first stretch and the other night slept 7 hours! He is also putting himself to sleep in the stroller or carseat while out and about without crying or needing me to rock or bounce him. Amanda helped us So much and I am eternally grateful for her support!
