Mellesa Goalen

Hi, I'm Mellesa, a Registered Social Worker (BSW), Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant, and certified in supporting the sleep needs of neurodivergent children. My background in social work provides me with a strong understanding of child development, attachment, family dynamics, and the impact that stress and trauma can have on both children and caregivers. I approach every family through a compassionate, trauma-informed, strengths-based, and family-centered lens.

As a Registered Social Worker, I am committed to upholding the high standards of ethical practice, professionalism, and accountability required by the Alberta College of Social Workers. I believe every family deserves individualized support that respects their parenting style, family values, and goals while providing the consistency needed to create lasting and meaningful change.

Beyond my professional experience, I am also a mom of two, and it was my own parenting journey that inspired this work. My oldest loved close connection and often fell asleep feeding or in my arms, reminding me that every child has unique sleep needs. My youngest was highly sensitive and faced medical challenges, including reflux and a cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). She became easily overstimulated and often struggled to settle comfortably, making sleep especially challenging for our family. Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for how closely sleep is connected to a child's health, temperament, development, and sense of security. They reinforced my belief that families deserve individualized, compassionate support rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.

My husband works shift work, and much of my parenting journey has involved caring for my children with limited day-to-day support. I understand how isolating it can feel to navigate sleepless nights while carrying much of the parenting load. I know firsthand the physical and emotional toll that sleep deprivation can have, and that's why supporting families through this season has become so meaningful to me.

My approach is gentle, holistic, attachment-based, and responsive. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all sleep training or expecting families to follow methods that don't align with their values. Instead, I work collaboratively with parents to create personalized sleep plans that consider each child's temperament, developmental stage, unique needs, and family goals. I believe healthy sleep can be achieved while protecting and strengthening the parent child relationship.

Whether you're navigating life with a newborn, supporting a toddler through bedtime struggles, or parenting a neurodivergent child with unique sleep needs, my goal is to help you feel supported, empowered, and confident as we work toward more restful nights together.
My philosophy

You don't have to choose between responding to your child and getting better sleep. Together, we'll create a gentle, holistic, attachment-based plan that honors your family's values while building healthy, lasting sleep habits.

I supported the family of a 15-month-old who had become reliant on co-sleeping and extensive parental support to fall asleep. She became very distressed whenever her parents attempted to transfer her to her crib, leaving the family feeling exhausted and unsure if independent sleep was possible. Together, we created a gentle, attachment-based sleep plan tailored to her temperament, using gradual, responsive strategies that aligned with the family's values. Within a few weeks, she was sleeping independently in her own crib through the night, bedtime became significantly less stressful, and her parents felt more confident and empowered in supporting her sleep.

I worked with the family of a 6-month-old (adjusted age) who was having difficulty connecting sleep cycles and falling asleep independently. As first-time parents, they wanted gentle guidance and a personalized plan that felt supportive and achievable. Together, we implemented responsive, developmentally appropriate strategies tailored to their baby's unique needs. Within just a few days, their baby began sleeping for longer stretches and developing independent sleep skills, leaving the whole family feeling more rested, confident, and less overwhelmed.

I supported the family of a 7-month-old who was waking every hour overnight and relied on extensive parental support to fall asleep. The family wanted a gentle, responsive approach that aligned with their parenting values while helping their daughter develop independent sleep skills. Together, we implemented a personalized sleep plan with gradual, developmentally appropriate strategies. Within a few weeks, she was sleeping through the night and independently falling asleep for both bedtime and naps, leaving her family feeling more rested, confident, and supported.

I worked with the family of a 10-month-old who was experiencing ongoing sleep challenges, and the parents were looking for a gentle, flexible approach that respected their daughter's unique temperament. After completing a thorough assessment, we created a personalized sleep plan and adjusted our strategies as we learned what worked best for their family. By remaining responsive and adapting the plan when needed, their daughter made meaningful progress toward healthier sleep habits, and her parents felt supported, informed, and confident throughout the process.

I supported a family of an 11-week-old infant who was experiencing frequent overnight wakings, short sleep stretches, and difficulty settling. Rather than focusing on sleep training, our goal has been to build healthy sleep foundations through responsive, developmentally appropriate care. Together, we've worked on optimizing full feeds, recognizing age-appropriate wake windows and sleepy cues, creating calming sleep routines, encouraging plenty of connection and babywearing, and supporting the baby's regulation throughout the day. Alongside sleep education, I've provided evidence-based guidance and emotional support to help the family feel more confident during the newborn stage. As a result, the baby has begun achieving longer stretches of overnight sleep, and the parents feel more empowered, reassured, and better equipped to understand their baby's sleep needs.

I supported the family of a 19-month-old who was experiencing ongoing sleep challenges that were affecting the entire family's well-being. Through a comprehensive assessment of their child's sleep patterns, routines, nutrition, temperament, and family circumstances, we developed a personalized, gentle sleep plan tailored to their unique needs. Along the way, I provided education on the science of sleep, age-appropriate expectations, and the important role that nutrition, daily routines, and development play in healthy sleep. Throughout our time together, I offered ongoing guidance, encouragement, and responsive support, adapting recommendations as needed. Over time, their daughter's sleep became more predictable and restful, and her parents felt reassured, empowered, and more confident in supporting her sleep with strategies that aligned with their family's values.

We finished our time with Mellesa and I couldn’t be more grateful. We started working together when my baby was only 2 months old, and with her patience and support we were able to move to longer stretches of sleep, sometimes even through the night completely! I’m grateful to have found her as I was completely loss, struggling with confidence as a parent and not sure how I was going to function each day with no sleep. We’re now hitting our 4 month sleep regression and the things I’ve learned through working with Mellesa are helping us get through it much easier than trying to navigate it blindly. Thank you Mellesa!!

We just finished working with Mellesa. My daughter went from waking every hour a night, unable to self soothe, to now sleeping through the night and putting herself to sleep for naps. Mellesa was patient, professional, informative and caring! Working with her was easy and truly saved my sanity. Would recommend Mellesa to any family that is having difficulties with sleep.

Mellesa has been so wonderful to work with over the past 2 weeks. She always gave different options for methods to help with sleep. I loved that she understood that not all babies will react to the same method or intervention. With her thorough intake form, call and questions, she got to know my daughter’s sleep habits very well! When one method wasn’t working, she was quick to pivot and offer other suggestions. Mellessa’s communication was prompt, informative and caring. I loved having sleep advice just a message away!

I am very satisfied with Mellesa's consultation. She took ample time to examine out sleep patterns and circumstances in order to find a solution tailored to our needs. She explained in detail why sleep problems exist and gave very helpful advice to improve my toddler's sleep, including eating habits and nutrition. She possess a broad range of knowledge and is able to connect and apply it effectively. She alleviated my concerns and encouraged me to implement the suggestions. She always responded quickly to questions and was very empathetic, which made me feel comfortable with her advice. She was never intrusive but always responded to our needs with understanding and consideration, providing appropriate guidance. Her advice actually worked, and my daughter's sleep patterns have become more stable and better. Thank you so much! I wholeheartedly recommend Mellesa's consultation! confident as parents. :)

Working with Mellesa was such a positive experience for our family. Before working with her my son struggled to connect sleep cycles and fall asleep independently. As a first-time mom, I felt unsure of where to start but Mellesa was incredibly supportive every step of the way. She checked in often, responded quickly, and always provided helpful, thoughtful guidance. We started seeing improvements within just 2–3 days, which amazed me. My son was sleeping longer and better, and I finally was too. I felt more rested and less overwhelmed. I would absolutely recommend Mellesa to any parent needing support with their baby’s sleep.

Transition to independent sleep
★★★★★

Working with Mellesa has been one of the best decisions for our family. Ruby was the definition of a velcro baby and had gotten into the habit of sleeping with me because she would scream anytime I tried putting her in her crib. I honestly didn’t think independent sleep was possible for her, and I felt so overwhelmed and emotional about the whole situation. From the very beginning, Mellesa was so empathetic, encouraging, and supportive. She never made me feel judged and always took the time to listen, reassure me, and guide me through every step. Her approach felt gentle, realistic, and personalized to Ruby’s temperament. I truly could not believe the progress we saw. Ruby is now sleeping all night in her own bed, and bedtime has become so much less stressful for all of us. I never thought we would get to this point. I’m beyond grateful for Mellesa’s support and would absolutely recommend her to any family struggling with sleep — especially moms who feel like they’ve tried everything.
